
Professor and chair of medical microbiology at the faculty of Health Sciences, Linköping University, Linköping, Sweden.
He is presently appointed as a special governmental inquirer and expert of clinical research in Sweden. He received his PhD in medical microbiology (1973) and MD (1978) at Linköping University and was appointed professor of medical microbiology 1983. He has been a visiting scientist at Harvard Medical School, University of Geneva and UC at San Francisco (UCSF), USA.
He was Dean of the medical school 1984-87 and vice president at Linköping University 1989-95. He has been the Secretary General for The Swedish Medical Research Council 1994-2001 and the president for The Swedish Society of Medicine 2004-05. He is on the board of Karolinska Institutet and several research foundations. His main research interest is in infectious biology and host defense, particularly tuberculosis and global health.
